This walking adventure takes you deep into the remarkable landscapes of Picos de Europa National Park.
Situated in the Cantabrian Mountains, the park extends across Asturias, Cantabria and the province of León. Its three great limestone massifs rise dramatically above deep valleys, river gorges, Atlantic forests and traditional mountain villages.
Explore the contrasting landscapes of the Western, Central and Eastern Massifs, each offering its own distinctive scenery and walking challenges.
A dramatic limestone landscape
The Picos de Europa contain approximately 200 summits rising above 2,000 metres. The highest is Torrecerredo, reaching 2,646 metres in the Central Massif.
Millions of years of geological activity and water erosion have created a spectacular world of sharp peaks, deep gorges, caves and towering limestone walls.
- The Western Massif
The largest of the three massifs, combining high mountain scenery with the famous Covadonga Lakes and extensive grazing areas.
- The Central Massif
The highest and most rugged section of the park, home to Torrecerredo and the iconic Picu Urriellu, also known as Naranjo de Bulnes.
- The Eastern Massif
A quieter mountain landscape rising dramatically above the Cantabrian region of Liébana.
Mountains beside the Cantabrian Sea
The Picos de Europa rise surprisingly close to Spain’s northern coast. From their high ridges and viewpoints, walkers can enjoy magnificent views towards the Cantabrian Sea and across the distinctively sculpted limestone peaks.
Deep valleys and green mountain pastures create a striking contrast with the high rocky summits. Livestock continues to graze on these upland pastures, preserving a way of life that has shaped the landscape for generations.
Outstanding nature and wildlife
The park’s great variation in altitude, climate and terrain supports a rich diversity of habitats, from Atlantic beech and oak forests to mountain grasslands and exposed limestone summits.
The region is home to an exceptional variety of wildlife, including:
- Cantabrian brown bears and wolves
- Chamois, roe deer and wild boar
- Golden eagles, griffon vultures and capercaillie
- A remarkable variety of alpine and Atlantic plant life
Wild animals live freely within a vast mountain environment and sightings can never be guaranteed.
A landscape rich in history and culture
The Picos de Europa have a long human history, from prehistoric communities and ancient peoples to Roman routes and centuries-old pastoral traditions.
Small villages lie within the valleys and around the mountain massifs, offering an authentic introduction to rural life in northern Spain.
