GREAT TOUR AROUND THE PICOS DE EUROPA

This Trekking takes us into the beautiful mountain scenery of Picos de Europa National Park. The tour explores the  Park with walks in the wild landscapes of the western, central and eastern massifs.

This unique region of Spain lies along the North coast near the city of Santander.  The Picos are a limestone mountain range that hugs the provinces of Asturias, Cantabria & the northern part of Spain's largest province, Castile and León.  It is an eco-destination, one of Europe's first National Parks.  As such, there is no mass tourism or related infrastructure.  Instead, you have a natural environment where wild nature & man live in harmony.  With a limestone range, peaks reaching 2,600m, deep valleys & green pastures where animals graze up to 2,000m, the area is rich in wildlife, plants, history & geology.  Bears, wolves, eagles, vultures, chamois, deer & many others populate the area along with alpine plants & so much more.

Little villages dot the valleys, with some higher up & dotted throughout the three “massifs”, giving this area a lovely, authentic rural experience where local culture & gastronomy are still preserved.

This tour gives you all of that. The walks are one part of it. The cultural & environmental experiences are the others.

Day 19th October. THE ROUTE OF THE MAJADAS. CIRCULAR ROUTE. DISTANCE: 12 Km +400m/-400m

Meeting point in Cangas de Onís or Arenas de Cabrales at 9.30. Transfer to Covadonga Lakes. A Majada is a high mountain meadow where horses, sheep, or other animals graze during the mild summer months. The trip starts at Lake Enol in the heart of the Picos de Europa mountain range, heads up to the top of La Reblagas, and then on to the beautiful Toyeyo Majada. The route then continues to Las Bobias Majada and on to Vega de Ario, where you will stop to eat with spectacular views of the Cantabrian Sea and the peaks of Las Peñas Santas. The route continues via the Belbin Majada, famous for manufacturing Gamonedo cheese and returns to Lake Enol. Transfer to Arenas de Cabrales. Dinner and accommodation in Arenas de Cabrales.

Day 20th October. MONTE CAMBA TRAIL. NARANJO DE BULNES AND CENTRAL MASSIF PEAKS PANORAMA ROUTE. DISTANCE: 10 Km +200m/-530m

Breakfast. The walk begins directly from Sotres. After leaving the village, a forest path leads us up to the shepherds' cabin at La Caballar. We continue down where the scenery changes, crossing a beautiful beech forest. Looking skyward, you can spot a variety of eagles and vultures riding the thermals. The path leads us to a viewpoint at ‘Majada Tobaos’, which rewards us with commanding views of Tielve far below and the jagged peaks of the central massif in the distance. Lunch in a homemade restaurant, transfer to Arenas de Cabrales. Dinner and accommodation in Arenas de Cabrales.

Day 21st October. THE CARES GORGE PATH. SINGLE ROUTE. DISTANCE: 13 Km +250m/-150m (Self-Guided)

Breakfast. This gorge, with its narrow passes and gullies, is right in the heart of the Picos de Europa Mountains. The area’s stunning landscape affords unique views of the National Park.

Exploring this route is a unique experience. The trail is narrow, surrounded by wild vegetation, with water ever-present. The river flows along the valley floor; its sound is a constant companion along the way. Now and again, the path takes you through small tunnels carved into the rock and across bridges that hang over the abyss. All the while, rocky mountainsides tower up on either side of the trail. The itinerary runs between Poncebos, in Asturias province, and Cain, in Leon province, and parallels the Cares, the area’s wildest river. The route covers 12 kilometres over easy terrain. Transfer to Espinama. We will make a stop in the town of Potes. Dinner and accommodation in Espinama.

Day 22nd October. HIKE TO HORCADOS ROJOS AND CABAÑA VERÓNICA HUT. 10,5 Km +550m/-550m

Today we walk the route from the Cable car to Horcados Rojos in the glacier Circus Fuente Dé. The Horcados Rojos mountain pass is a magnificent balcony inside the Central Massif. Along the way, we enjoy the essence of the high mountains of the Picos de Europa: vegetation adapted to harsh climatic conditions, a rocky landscape of sharp peaks, alpine birds, and more. On the way back, we'll visit the unique Cabaña Verónica hut and return to the cable car. Dinner and accommodation at Hostal Remoña.

Day 23rd October. EL CABLE – ALIVA – SOTRES. 12km +100m/-900m. (Self-guided).

Breakfast. This route offers a great chance to enjoy the gorgeous Aliva Glacier Valley, part of the GR-202 “Route of the Reconquest”. From the Cable, we walk up to Horcadina de Covarrobres, with magnificent views of the Aliva Glacier Valley. From there, we descend continuously to the Aliva Hut, then along the moraine of the great Aliva Glacier, crossing the border between Asturias and Cantabria, and arriving at “Vegas del Toro”.
