The “Big Trek” tour is suitable for those hillwalkers who enjoy trekking “hut to hut” and challenging walks at higher altitudes over tougher, longer routes.  Ideal for experienced walkers. 

The Central or Urrielu Massif of the Picos de Europa is with no doubt, the most wild and spectacular scenery in the National Park. The highest peaks of the National Park are in this massif, Torrecerredo (2,650 m) and its iconic peak, Naranjo de Bulnes or Pico Urriellu.

Itinerary description

Hut to Hut Trek in the Picos de Europa. The highest peaks of the National Park are in this massif, Torrecerredo (2,650 m) and its iconic peak, Naranjo de Bulnes or Pico Urriellu.

Day 1. FROM VALCAVAO TO COLLADO JERMOSO REFUGE. Gradient: + 700m – 400m Distance: 8 Km Duration: 4-5 hours
Description:

Transfer to Pandetrave mountain pass and then by track to Valcabao. Today, we start with a beautiful walk that goes from Valcabao to Collado Jermoso Refuge by the Canal de Pedabejo, walking near the spectacular Vega de Liordes and along the cliffs of Colladinas until arriving at Collado Jermoso Refuge, our first stop and overnight. We rest and look forward to the fabulous sunset with beautiful views of the Valdeón Valley and the Western Massif. Dinner and overnight at the refuge.

Day 2. FROM COLLADO JERMOSO REFUGE TO URRIELLU REFUGE. Gradient: + 800m – 850m Distance: 10 Km Duration: 6-7 hours
Description:

We leave the hut to the Collada Ancha and Tiro Casares to reach the Cabaña Verónica Refuge. From here, we descend to Horcados Rojos, with incredible views of Naranjo de Bulnes and walk down to the Jou de Los Boches by a steep and exposed slope, not suitable for people with vertigo. We cross the moonscape of the Jou of Los Boches and Jou sin Tierre until arriving at the Urriellu Refuge. Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.

Day 3. FROM URRIELLU REFUGE TO CABRONES REFUGE. Gradient: + 700 m - 550 m Distance: 6 Km Duration: 5-6 hours
Description:

We start by leaving behind us the west face of the iconic Picu Urriellu, walking up for “Corona del Raso”. Now we have a short scramble through “Brecha de los Cazadores, which takes us closer to the “Horcada Arenera (2,283 m)”. Now we can ascend a nearby summit across complicated terrain and karstic holes, known as “Jous” in Picos de Europa. We continue until Cabrones Refuge, in one of the most wild and spectacular places of the Picos de Europa. Dinner and overnight stay at Cabrones mountain hut.

Day 4. FROM CABRONES REFUGE TO PONCEBOS. Gradient: - 1.780 m Distance: 8,5 Km Duration: 4-5 Hours
Description:

We will finish this incredible trek with a challenging stage because of the steep slope of descent, which is quite technical. In the first section, you go through aerial cornices with the help of fixed ropes and delicate steps until you reach the “Cuesta del Trave”. From here, it is a steep descent towards the “Majada de Amuesa” to get to Bulnes. After a rest and meal in the village, a final descent down the “Canal del Tejo” to Poncebos.

The Trekking is done. In Poncebos, the vehicle is waiting for us to transfer to Cangas de Onis.

TERMS & CONDITIONS 

DEPOSIT

A deposit of 20% is required to reserve a place on the tour.  The Deposit should be paid immediately to ensure that the tour company Rumbo a Picos can confirm your reservation. 

FINAL PAYMENT

Final payment must be made not later than 30 days prior to the tour start date. 

CANCELLATION POLICY 

  • If the client cancels his/her booking prior to the tour start date,  to cover the tour company’s costs & administrative expenses, the company will retain for a  cancellation prior to 90days/€50, 60days/€100, 30days/€150 and will refund to the client all other payments received by the company from the client.
  • If the client cancels his/her booking within 30 days of the tour start date, the tour company will not make any refund to the client.
  • The tour company reserves the right to modify the tour program & the itinerary in the event of circumstances outside of their control, such as Force Majure, severe or unsuitable weather or any other circumstances they consider necessary to ensure the safety of the tour participants. 
  • If a participant decides to abandon the tour for whatever reason, he/she should inform the Guide in writing of their decision.  Any related expenses must be paid by the participant.
