Trekking Picos de Europa. Hiking trip in the Picos de Europa National Park. 5 days 4 nights.
Day 1. HIKE TO VEGABAÑO FOREST & JARIO PEAK. CIRCULAR ROUTE. DISTANCE: 14 Km ⇑900m ⇓900m
Meeting point in Cangas de Onis. Transfer to Soto de Sajambre. The Jario Peak is located in the area of Sajambre (León), which is a paradise of forests. The lower part of its route requires crossing forests of sublime beauty. The Jario Peak is separated from the rest of the Massif by the large meadows and forests of Vegabaño. Its situation is, therefore, an extraordinary viewpoint of the rest of the summits, both the Western Massif of Picos de Europa and the mountains of Ponga and Redes. Transfer to Boca de Huergano. Dinner and accommodation.
Day 2. FROM VALCAVAO TO COLLADO JERMOSO REFUGE. SINGLE ROUTE. DISTANCE: 8 Km ⇑700m ⇓400m
Breakfast. Transfer to Pandetrave mountain pass and then by track to Valcabao. Today, we start with a wonderful walk that goes from Valcabao to Collado Jermoso Refuge by the Canal de Pedabejo, walking near the spectacular Vega de Liordes and along the cliffs of Colladinas until arriving at Collado Jermoso Refuge, our first stop and overnight. We rest and look forward to watching the fabulous sunset with wonderful views of the Valdeón Valley and the Western Massif. Dinner and overnight at the refuge.
Day 3. FROM COLLADO JERMOSO TO FUENTE DÉ. SINGLE ROUTE. DISTANCE: 12 Km ⇑150m ⇓1.150m
Breakfast. Today, we retrace our steps until Vega de Liordes and go on to Fuente Dé. This route from Vega de Liordes to Fuente Dé is a progressive transition between the valley and the high mountain, passing from the oak and beech forests in the surroundings of Fuente Dé to the alpine grasslands at the foot of the rocks of “Peñas de Cifuentes”. The route runs through one of the most ecological value areas of the National Park, with species such as the Cantabrian brown bear, wolf, deer, wild boar or chamois. The route also has important elements of human presence, such as the remains of the old mines of Liordes.
In the afternoon, we will go to Potes to visit the medieval and the main village in the Liebana Valley. Dinner and accommodation in Espinama.
Day 4. HIKE TO HORCADOS ROJOS SUMMIT AND CABAÑA VERONICA HUT. CIRCULAR ROUTE. DISTANCE: 12 KM ⇑800 m ⇓800 m
Breakfast. Today, we will walk the route from the Cable car to Horcados Rojos in Glacier Circus Fuente Dé. The summit Horcados Rojos (2,506 m) is a magnificent balcony inside the Central Massif, accessible by its side NO. Along the way, we enjoy the essence of the high mountains of the Picos de Europa, vegetation adapted to the harsh climatic conditions, rocky landscape of sharp peaks, alpine birds, etc. On the way back, we will go to the singular Cabaña Veronica hut and back again to the cable car. Transfer to Arenas de Cabrales, crossing La Hermida Gorge. Dinner and accommodation in Arenas de Cabrales.
Day 5. MONTE CAMBA TRAIL. NARANJO DE BULNES AND CENTRAL MASSIF PEAKS PANORAMA ROUTE. CIRCULAR ROUTE DISTANCE: 10 KM ⇑350 m ⇓350 m
Breakfast. The walk begins directly from Sotres. After leaving the village, a forest path leads us up to the Cabin shepherds of La Caballar. We continue down where the scenery changes, crossing a beautiful beech forest. Looking skyward, it is possible to spot a variety of eagles and vultures roaming the thermals. The path leads us to a viewpoint at ‘Majada Tobaos’, which rewards us with commanding views of Tielve far below and the jagged peaks of the central massif in the distance. We descend and walk to the village of Tielve. Lunch in a homemade restaurant and back to Cangas de Onis. End of services.
