This walk is a one-way hiking trail with a mix of dry and wet sections. The route includes rocky, stony paths; thick vegetation; forested areas; grasslands; and open viewpoints, offering diverse ecosystems and spectacular panoramic views. The trail begins on the lower slopes, ascending through tea plantations before reaching the higher elevations. The upper parts of the range are characterised by vast, windswept grassy plains and patches of cloud forest, which are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Start point 821m, highest 1,143m, finish at 823m.
After breakfast, we drive to Mahakanda village (Closer to Peradeniya). It takes an hour to reach there from Kandy town. Start the walk at the Mahakanda trailhead early morning to beat the heavy midday heat and avoid the unpredictable mountain mist that usually rolls in by afternoon. The trail starts by leading us up through some beautiful western tea estate paths, which is perfect because it lets us contour safely around the spine of the mountain and completely bypass those famously sketchy, exposed cliffs of Katusu Konda. After we navigate those lower trails, we will head up the less-exposed backside of the mountain to reach the towering peak of Uraagala. It is a fantastic spot to drop our pack, rest our legs, and eat lunch on the big, flat stone platforms while soaking in the sweeping panoramic views. When you are ready to move on, you will head down the steep, south-facing grassy slopes that drop straight down toward the valley basin. At the bottom, we hook directly into the well-marked gravel roads. From there, it is a much more relaxed walk as we follow the wide estate roads winding through active tea plantations. We will finally wrap up our journey and arrive in Kithulmulla village. Once in the village, it is easy to get to the main Galaha-Kandy road, where we pick up our coach and travel back to Kandy. All in all, this point-to-point trek covers roughly 11 to 14 km depending on the exact footpaths we end up taking. After completing the trail, we drive to our hotel in Kandy, which is a 30-minute drive.

After breakfast, we drive to Poththapitiya village (closer to Pilimathalawa). It takes 60 minutes to reach the route start point from our hotel. The journey begins at the Poththapitiya Bus Station, winding through the local tea factory and terraced estates before climbing into the high mana grasslands.
After navigating the rocky scramble of the "Sinha Kata" (Lion's Mouth) to reach the 1,140m summit, we are met with a spectacular 360-degree panorama that captures the heart of Sri Lanka's hill country. From the top, we can clearly see the famous flat-topped Bible Rock (Bathalegala) and the sharp peaks of Utuwankanda to the west, while the distant, jagged blue outlines of the Knuckles Mountain Range and Sri Pada (Adam's Peak) are often visible on clear days. Looking directly down, the view offers a unique perspective of the Main Line railway snaking through the mountain's base, along with the winding Kadugannawa Pass and the lush, green expanse of the Kegalle and Mawanella valleys.
As we begin the descent toward the Poojagala shrine and down the narrow "Katusu Konda" ridge, we get a bird’s-eye view of the surroundings, including Meeyan Ella waterfall and the dark mouth of the railway tunnel near the train station at Ihalakotte. The total distance for this scenic trek is approximately 8-10 km. If trains are running on this route to Kandy, we catch a train to Kandugannawa station and take our coach from there to Kandy. As the forest thins, we emerge into a hauntingly beautiful abandoned tea estate. Here, nature is slowly reclaiming the land, offering spectacular, unobstructed vistas of the Central Highlands that few travellers ever see. The morning highlight is the ascent to Kondagala Rock. From the summit, we experience a "top of the world" feeling with 360-degree views stretching toward the Knuckles Range and the Victoria Reservoir. After descending from the peaks, the history of the Loolecondera Estate will be shared with us. We stop at James Taylor’s Seat, the exact spot where the father of Ceylon tea sat to survey his first acres and walk past the ruins of his 19th-century log cabin. We conclude the day by winding down through the lush, manicured rows of tea fields (the first ever planted tea field in Sri Lanka), finishing at the official gate of Loolcondera. We first reach a hidden mountain waterfall for a quick breather before pushing toward the ridge. Our goal is the first three peaks of the iconic Knuckles range, where we stand atop a landscape that resembles a clenched fist, offering 360-degree panoramic views of the Matale and Kandy districts. From the summits, we trek toward Thangappuwa village, descending into a lush, untouched wilderness known only to local guides. Here, we discover the Kotaganga Seven Waterfalls, a spectacular chain of seven cascading segments that drop over 40 meters through the deep forest. This is arguably Sri Lanka’s most beautiful waterfall trail, where we can dip our feet in crystal-clear rock pools and enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by the sounds of the jungle. The trek concludes in the traditional village of Kotaganga, where we experience the authentic, simple pace of hillside life. From here, a thrilling tuk-tuk ride- another Sri Lankan experience will whisk us through winding mountain roads to Rangala.
