What are hut-to-hut hiking trips?

Hut-to-hut hiking trips are multi-day itineraries where hikers walk from one mountain refuge to the next. Each day, you carry a light backpack with essentials, while the refuges provide a bed and dinner at the end of each stage.

At Rumbo a Picos, we have over 20 years of experience organizing hut-to-hut trekking in the Pyrenees, Picos de Europa and the Alps. Our qualified guides manage the logistics so you can fully enjoy the mountains.

What are mountain huts like?

Mountain huts are basic facilities for hikers and mountaineers. There are two main types:

  • Staffed huts: with personnel, meals, and bunk beds. Typically include dinner, breakfast, and blankets or bed linens.
  • Unstaffed or bivouac huts: simpler, sometimes with free access; ideal for a more wild experience.

We prioritize staffed huts for comfort and safety. Sleeping in a refuge is part of the experience: meet fellow hikers, share stories, and enjoy starry skies away from city lights.
