The southern side of the Picos de Europa may have a different climate than the Cantabrian seaward side and, along with the Western Massif, approached from the South, offers many different perspectives. The first part of the trip takes you into the heart of the Riaño mountains south of the Picos.
There, you will immediately feel the expansive grandeur of these Alpine-like peaks mirrored in the still water of the lakes beneath them. The villages, too, are small, intimate, and pretty. Very few hill walkers and tourists are in this area, adding to the sense of tranquility that will make this tour an exceptional experience.
We will move to the Natural Park of Fuentes Carrionas in the second part. The natural landscape, fauna, and botanical value of the Montaña Palentina led to its declaration as a Natural Park under the names of Fuentes Carrionas and Fuente Cobre in 2000.
The Montaña Palentina is a highly sensitive space. It is the natural habitat of the brown bear and the capercaillie, as well as various botanical species specific to these places.
The Montaña Palentina is located to the north of the province of Palencia. It has complex tectonics and a fascinating landscape, the result of the action of both karstic phenomena (Cueva del Cobre, Sumidero del Sel de la Fuente) and glaciers, which is reflected in cirques, valleys and lagoons (Lago de las Lomas, Lago de Ves, Pozo
Curavacas). El Curavacas (2,525m.), El Espigüete (2,450m.) and Las Lomas (2,451m.) are the highest peaks of the Montaña Palentina.

Situated on the West side of the Pyrenees is the Parque Nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Ordesa is famous for its 3,000m deep glacial valleys, overlooked by Monte Perdido, standing at 3,348m high. The park contains a dozen or so other summits of over 3000m, mostly strung out along the border. There are hiking trails suitable for all levels. The challenging GR11 route also connects the Pyrenees range from the Bay of Biscay to the Mediterranean. The trails take one through mountain summits, waterfalls, lakes, and caves or follow valleys and high mountain meadows.

The CadÍ-Moixeró Nature Reserve is an essential place for nature lovers and can be contemplated anywhere in the region. Its peaks range from 900 metres (in the lowest areas of the valleys) to the 2,648 metres of the Canal Baridana mountain.
With a surface area of over 41,000 hectares distributed between Berguedà, Alt Urgell and La Cerdanya, it includes the mountain ranges of El Cadí and Moixeró, the Pedraforca massif and a large part of the hill of Alp and Puigllançada. It creates a mountainous barrier thirty kilometres long.
This geography offers a variety of landscapes, such as those of foothills, alpine and sub-alpine areas, and rocky environments with their characteristic rich vegetation and fauna. Given its east-west orientation, significant climatic differences are caused between each side, particularly the amount of rain. Similarly, small masses of water, such as torrents and some springs, can be found due to the calcareous structure.
The vegetation is dominated by meadows of fodder and garlic in the valleys, surrounded by fields of potatoes and beans. Deciduous trees, such as beech, oak, ash and willow, form the forests. Despite this, the trees that dress these spots are the Scots, black pine, and, in a smaller number, fir trees.
The animals inhabiting the area are typical of the high mountain, most notably the woodpecker (the park's symbol), Tengmalm's owl and the marten. However, the lords of the heights are the ibex, with a population of more than 2,600.
This is, in fact, the protected area in Catalonia with the most significant number of inhabitants and species of flora and fauna of European interest.
In addition to the natural beauty, the secret heritage of the park is a point of particular interest for tourists. The medieval walls and the porticoed square of Bagà are two perfect examples, not to mention the Gothic church and the towers and walls of Bellver de Cerdanya. The rural architecture and the picturesque of most of the towns and villages that form part of the park make visits an absolute pleasure.

The Somiedo Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve is home to one of the main bear and grouse populations of the Cantabrian Mountains. With the area of the Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña, and Ibias Natural Park, the multitude of relatively isolated valleys and mountains have allowed maintaining that wildlife.
Here, a hiker's paradise opens up, full of contrasts from the high peaks to the broad glacial valleys with their lakes, lagoons and pastures to the rugged and wooded river valleys.
The human being has been linked to this territory for millennia, including the "vaqueiros de alzada" and "xaldos", leaving a valuable ethnographic heritage such as the "teito cabins", the corros or the pallozas that will accompany us during all the routes.
In addition, the link with the land is still alive in these regions, Cangas de Narcea wine, sausage, heather honey or cheese are some products that will make us enjoy the gastronomic aspect of the trip.
